Maura Carroll and I attended the RPD Traffic Safety meeting last week. We met with Captain Danielle Willsey and Highway Superintendent, Mike Zelski. They have been monitoring the traffic on Pier Avenue all summer. Their study does not show the need for a stop sign but they will submit the data to New York State to request a lower speed limit of 30mph. They also agreed to continue to send out traffic patrols and random speed checks. I'm not sure what else we can do as co

For me, as a photographer and also a resident of Northville Beach, the fields along the east side of Penny’s Road are the gifts that keep on giving. Not only do I enjoy the view of them as I come and go but also because they've been the subject of some of my favorite photos that I’ve taken of the North Fork. (In particular it’s where I shot the “Potato Truck” image (https://www.northvillebeachcivic.org/post/mike-s-north-fork-moment-of-the-month), my most popular photograph.)

This post is for history buffs who would like to see Riverhead's history preserved through photographs. The Riverhead Library has a project underway seeking old photographs of Riverhead families. While it doesn’t look like we will get a stop sign anytime soon, I do see an increase in RPD and Traffic Control cars on Pier Ave. I explained to the office of the chief of police that when the patrols are present, the speed of traffic slows. However, we can tell when they are not here. Cars and motorcycles speed to the beach and a few minutes later right back toward Sound Ave or possibly turning onto Sound Shore which is even more dangerous. There is a Trafic Safety mee

Just learned that Suffolk County Water Authority has rerouted its proposed water main extension to Southold off of Northville Turnpike and Sound Ave and onto the Main Rd through Aquebogue. This means no booster station on the west corner of Sound Ave and Pier Ave as previously planned. Saturday, June 27th's party started off with a bit of rain but still everyone headed to Cindy's for the outdoor party. Raincoats and umbrellas were soon discarded as the drizzle ended and the festivities began. New faces and old ones enjoyed the beautiful view, great food and lively conversations. In case you happened to notice as I did recently that the Town Board had on its Work Session agenda for Executive Session (not open to the public) pending litigation between The United Riverhead Terminal and the Town of Riverhead and it caused you to wonder might be going on, I made inquiry and have learned it is a URT challenge to its tax assessment. So rest easy, as of right now there is nothing new regarding the proposed housing development on URT property or any change

The Riverhead PD put up a speed counter on the corner of Pier and Henry Lewis. The results were that the average speed was 37mph. My thought is that for all the safe drivers clocking at 25 to 30, there were as many going over 50 in a 35 zone. I have asked for a copy of the report. There have been patrols of Traffic Control. Just yesterday I saw RPD stop 3 drivers within the 1 hour that I was out walking. It was also reported that a patrol car closed the beach at 8:30pm.

Spring, of course, is a time of beginnings. The beginning of more temperate weather, the beginning of friends and neighbors returning after Winter, and the beginning of the growing season. I love the up close and personal view we have of the crop cycle here on the North Fork. And in particular the view of it as we approach Northville Beach coming up Penny’s Road. One of our beautiful local foxes has sustained an injury to its leg. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center suggested that if anyone sees this fox to call them at the time of the sighting. 631-728-9453 Our injured fox is mobile and appears otherwise healthy. Wildlife can often survive such injuries. Foxes are very difficult to trap and will easily become trap shy. Many thanks to Victoria and Mars Todis for bringing this issue to our attention. Check out the restored Northville sign on Sound Shore Rd, complements of our ‘in house’ handymen! A hearty thanks to Jim Beckmann and Roy Dower for their hard work and talent in repairing the broken sign and posts. In the interest of safety, they first tested for lead paint which turned out negative. Great job Roy and Jim!

Supervisor Jerry Halpin presided over the Town of Riverhead meeting with multiple Civics in the Town. Linda Prizer and Nancy Beckmann were there representing Northville Beach. Supervisor Halpin opened the meeting with the 2026 agenda for the Town. His priorities are to attract new businesses and yet protect our farmlands and waterways. Hoping everyone is surviving the storm well. I am writing to let all our extremely generous NBCA neighbors know how well the Holiday Drive went this past season.
