Attended: Police Chief Edward Frost
Assistant Tammy More
Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski
I attended the Traffic Safety Committee meeting Thursday morning to request consideration for a stop sign on Pier Ave. I presented comments from the NBCA website blog, a signed petition from concerned neighbors and other emails and texts that I had received.
Chief Frost agreed to check out the road. He will check the signage already in place and put up a speed box for an extended period of time to determine how fast drivers are actually going. They will also boost active enforcement.
Superintendent Zaleski discourages a stop sign due to the added problems of people running it or taking off faster to make up for the time lost stopping. He will not consider a speed bump due to the danger of losing control by driving over it too fast. Also, he feels that the majority of drivers would not want them. When the culvert was constructed on Pier to clear the flooding problem, a small ridge remained. The town received enough complaint calls for them to come back and fix the bump.
While I am not confident that we will get a stop sign anytime soon, I feel that we have their attention. I now have names and contact information to follow up. They know we have a problem and they feel confident that surveillance and enforcement will work.
To be continued…..
Thanks Nancy for attending and raising this important issue. I understand the speed bump point but can't agree that stopping at a stop sign makes you speed after stopping. We probably need to just keep making the request. I also like Mike's idea. I believe it was raised at a civic roundtable and the response was the device is very costly. Worth pursuing though for sure.
Thanks for your work on this Nancy. I wonder if as an alternative the town might be willing to give us a "your speed" monitoring sign? There are several permanent ones in the area including on Edwards Avenue. Do we have any results from the temproary one that we had several years ago? A quick internet search indicates that they can be effective, and from my own personal experience I know that they can.
Great job Nancy! Thank you for taking the time and effort to attend the meeting and for pursuing this issue.
