Passing of Don Snyder

  • Long time Northville Beach resident Don Snyder, (Coach), died on Sunday in hospice at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center.

Uncle Don was the long-time winning football coach at Farmingdale High School and athletic director at the school district.  He was born in Rochester in 1926. He graduated from LeRoy High School before joining the Navy and graduating from Springfield College.  He met his wife Melissa (Mickey) while they were both working on master's in physical education at Columbia.  They were married in 1951 until Mickey's death in 2004.  He was also heavily involved in his community, serving as chief and commissioner of the Wantagh Fire Department for many years.

Northville neighbors may remember Uncle Don as one of the first trustees.  His wise and calm manner was always appreciated.  Early members might remember him cooking barbecue chicken at the early

yearly gathering at the Grange Hall on Sound Avenue or bartending at the annual cocktail parties. Beach lovers might recall him teaching his children, countless nieces and nephews and Northville kids how to waterski with a level of patience that was extraordinary.  His kindness shined always.

Uncle Don is survived by his four children, Ron of Florida, Keith of Coram, Pam Ball of Wantagh, and

David of Patchogue, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as nieces and a nephew who all loved him very much.

There will be wakes on the 13th and 14th from 2-4 and 7-9 at O'Shea Funeral Home in Wantagh.

There will also be a Memorial Service on September 15th at 1 PM at the Levittown Presbyterian

    Church.

Nancy Edgar Winkler on behalf of the family
