Mike's North Fork Moment of the Month

As evidenced by the increasing traffic on Sound Avenue, harvest season on the North Fork is approaching its peak. While the pumpkins, corn, and apples get all of the attention there’s another kind of harvest that is part of the seasonal cycle on the East End: sod. While not necessarily tied to fall sod harvests pick up this time of year to give farmers time to plant a cover crop before the first frost.

I happened by this sod harvest ‘still life’ on Northville Turnpike after the workers had quit for the day. I was particularly drawn to the geometry of the scene as well as the "big sky" nature of the vista resulting from the positioning of the equipment at the top of a rise.
