Mike's North Fork Moment of the Month

The Mattituck Oak on Mill Lane had long been a favorite subject of mine and also of many other photographers on the North Fork. I captured it more than a few times and in every season. The stateliness of its form and isolated position on a rural country lane were conducive to a variety of creative compositions. Over time it lost several major limbs but never its grandeur. Finally in 2017 it lost its last battle and was no longer standing at all, save for a stump. “Moondance” is one of my favorite photos of the Mattituck Oak - taken when it was already in decline but still seemingly able to engage with a rising full moon.
