You may or may not be aware that the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA), which is not a governmental entity, is planning to run a water main extension from Flanders out to Southold. It was originally designed to go down Peconic Bay Blvd but it has now been rerouted to come across 105 to Northville Tpk to Sound Ave. Although the pipeline will involve tearing up Riverhead roads for installation, it will provide no water to Riverhead and no benefits to the Town. This link describes the project.
The project is currently being evaluated for environmental impacts. SCWA has been holding meetings known as scoping sessions to get input on what the public believes should be studied in looking at the impact of this project on the environment. At the recent scoping meeting in Riverhead, I learned the project includes construction of a booster pumping station on a piece of property just north of Sound Ave at the corner of Pier Ave. Both John Cullen and I asked that the environmental study include the potential impacts of this pumping station on surrounding properties due to noise and vibration.
This 405-square-foot booster station would be built on a 1.5-acre property owned by SCWA. Two 16-inch mains will be installed to and from the booster station to service the pipeline. The SCWA property is 200 feet north of the Pier Avenue and Sound Avenue intersection on the west side of Pier Avenue. The booster station would be set roughly 97 feet back from the street and about 40 feet from the closest adjacent property line.
There will be additional opportunities for public comments as the process progresses. And Southold, which had its scoping session last week, is holding an informational meeting on June 16th.
